What is Fluorspar?

Fluorspar is a little known, but widely used critical mineral. It is the commercial name for the naturally occuring mineral "fluorite" - composed of calcium and fluorine (CaF2). It's used in everything from steel to refrigeration, to electronics, nuclear energy and lithium-ion batteries. There are two principal commercial grades of fluorspar - metallurgical (60-96% CaF2) and acid grade (+97%).

What are the Economics?

The USA is the largest importer of fluorspar, and fluorspar products in the world, however the USA currently produces no fluorspar. Demand for fluorspar products is forecast to grow exponentially.

China is the most dominant player in the fluorspar industry, owning  around 75% of the world's fluorspar market share. However, China's resources are effectively depleted, and they are now a net importer.

Excluding China, fluorspar producing countries include Mexico, Vietnam, South Africa, Mongolia with potential new sources including Pakistan and Canada.
